Clinic Opportunities

Puentes de Salud attracts more than 200 active student and faculty volunteers from eleven colleges and universities throughout the Philadelphia region. This interdisciplinary group learns about important issues in Latino health firsthand through supervised volunteer work at the clinic.

Professional Volunteers

Medical or Nursing Students

Clinical 1: The Clinical 1 position provides a great opportunity for medical students (MS1 and MS2) and nursing students to gain experience shadowing a provider and learning how to conduct a patient interview.

Clinical 2: The Clinical 2 position provides advanced nursing and medical students (MS3 and MS4) with the opportunity of conducting the majority of a patient interview. These students may lead a patient interview, perform a physical exam, and learn how to report back to the provider with their findings.

Clinic Student Coordinators

Puentes de Salud has developed a highly organized student coordinator structure comprising approximately 20 graduate, professional, undergraduate, public health, medical, and nursing students. These student coordinators fill 14 positions and collectively manage communications, community-based events, volunteer supervision and training, and participate in the daily functioning of the clinic.

Requirements: Coordinators are required to complete a minimum of a one-year service term January – December.

Application: Interviews occur each November/December to begin the following January.

Clinic Intake and Vitals

Academic Year Internships (September – May), Summer (May – August)

The purpose of these positions is to expose students to innovative non-profit health and wellness models. This position gives students an active role in the process of patient care through In-take and Vitals.  The intern will work closely with healthcare professionals and medical students. This position provides valuable mentorship for students considering or preparing for health professions. Students will gain insight and understanding of the clinical and social determinants of health impacting the South Philadelphia community.

Escolares de Salud Program

Academic Year (September – May). The Puentes de Salud Escolares Program is designed to provide current and future health care professionals with the tools they need to better understand and serve under-resourced communities both locally and globally.  Although the content of this program is primarily focused on gaining knowledge and insight into the South Philadelphia Latin American immigrant community, participants in the program will also gain a broader understanding of how social, cultural and environmental factors influence disease, health, and well being.This course will focus on the theoretical and practical study of the social determinants of health and provide participants with the tools to improve their understanding of the community and their interactions with patients.

Eligibility & Requirements: The Puentes de Salud Escolares de Salud Program is open to all Puentes de Salud volunteers regardless of their academic or career levels, including volunteers from the clinic and tutoring programs. Education Program Student Internships

We seek highly motivated individuals from all backgrounds to serve as Tutors/mentors, and Team Leaders in our After-School Program, Summer Camp, and Early Childhood Education Program. Puentes de Salud’s education branch, Puentes Hacia el Futuro, is predicated upon the well-evidenced fact that education is inextricably tied to the health of individuals and communities. Interns will have the unparalleled opportunity to work and to learn at the intersection of social justice, migration, community and urban education in a community-based environment. Interns will be able to build close relationships with our students and work closely as part of our team. Students may use this work to fulfill academic field work, internship, or independent study.

Tutor Internship

After-School Program Academic Year (September – May). The Tutor Internship at Puentes allows students a dynamic experience with students and families in South Philadelphia. Tutoring sessions pair tutors/mentors in small groups with children in grades K-8. While the program focuses on literacy, many academic, social, and cultural topics, activities and events are explored throughout the year. This internship is available to a highly accomplished and responsible college or graduate student or recent graduate. Volunteers do not need to speak Spanish to participate.

Team Leader Internship

After-School Program Academic Year (September – May). The purpose of the Team Leader at Puentes Hacia el Futuro internship is to take an active role in preparing for, leading, and following up on academic support sessions and educational activities.  The Team Leader Interns will work closely with educators and leaders in the Puentes organization, have the opportunity to contribute directly to program facilitation, develop an understanding of the social determinants of health impacting our community, and receive valuable mentorship. Team leaders must possess interpersonal skills to join an enthusiastic group that is passionate about supporting the education, health, and wellness of Latino children in South Philadelphia. Proficiency in Spanish is useful but not required. It is important for the intern to have a strong interest in building relationships with the children and families with whom we work.

Summer Camp Internship

(July – August) The Puentes Hacia el Futuro program offers a six-week summer program to 40-50 children who could most benefit from extra support in reaching grade level literacy. Summer student interns will have the opportunity to facilitate interactive sessions. Interns will have a significant amount of leadership and teamwork responsibility and thus are expected to be highly motivated. The interns will be responsible for the daily functioning of the program by leading educational, cultural, and activities and lessons for the children. The interns will work closely with educators, and leaders in the Puentes organization and gain an understanding of the social determinants of health and social justice issues impacting our community. This is a special opportunity to learn about and to practice the process of implementation of a public health initiative.
