Siembra Azul Foundation Sponsors Inaugural Trip to San Mateo Ozoloco and Mexico City

June 30, 2010

Siembra Azul Foundation sponsored and led a delegation to San Mateo Ozoloco, Puebla (the rural community from which many of Philadelphia's Mexican immigrants have migrated), and Mexico City to learn more about the health, education and cultural issues facing Mexican immigrants. The Foundation chose these areas of focus because of their importance to Philadelphia's Mexican community and to the residents of  San Mateo. Among others, the delegation included Mrs. Lisa Nutter, first lady of Philadelphia and president of Philadelphia Academies, Inc.; Dr. Steven Larson cofounder of Puentes de Salud; Ms. Nora Litz, representing El Viaje community arts project; and David Suro-Piñera of Siembra Azul Foundation. The delegates met with the first lady of Mexico, Mrs. Margarita Zavala. Mrs. Nutter, opened the discussion about Philadelphia's city-wide goals and activities in the areas of education, health and community arts. The delegation also shared observations from its visit to San Mateo. The objective of the conference was to foster ongoing dialogue that would lead to long-term initiatives addressing health, education and cultural issues in both San Mateo and our South Philadelphia Mexican community. Coordinating with friends, colleagues and Mexican government officials, the Foundation prepared another trip in May 2011. The Foundation, the people of San Mateo Ozoloco, and all those involved look forward to the future outcomes of this exciting initiative.
